?????Being induced????

So there were a lot of people that commented on my blog about being induced yesterday. I have some questions that I hope some of you might give some input on. Yesterday when I talked to the nurse at the hospital about inductions and epidurals she said that the good thing about being induced is you can have the epidural any time you want. So my question is when is a good time to get the epidural? Should I get that before they induce me? I just want to hear what worked for everyone else. I was also wondering for those who were induced how many hours they were in labor. I know everyone is different but I want some sort of idea as to the time it takes. I guess if anyone has anymore helpful positive information about inductions I would appreciate some hints. Thanks!

Yes everyone is different, so here is my story:
I went in at 6:00am and they started me, you may not want the pain meds right away because you won't feel anything for a while. My suggestion is get the pain meds before they break your water if you don't want to feel anything. I asked for the meds after they broke my water and had serious contractions right away. As you know, it takes the doctor more than an hour to even get in after you request him, so try to request him as soon as you think they'll break your water. The hard part is that after they break your water, you start hard contractions, you haven't worked into them, so they become really painfull very sudden. I was in "labor" for 13 hours, that is from the time they started me to the time Jack was born. For me, it was a smooth delivery and if it happens that way everytime, I could have 10 kids :)
I wish you the best of luck, as always, you can call me!

My advice is don't get the epidural before you are induced. I waited until it started hurting and then they gave it to me. They tried to tell me to wait a little longer because having it that early would increase my chances of having a c-section. I was like, whatever, this hurts give me the drugs. It all turned out fine. My labor was fourteen hours but an hour and a half of that was pushing, she was being pretty stubborn. :) I really didn't think it was that big a deal, esp if you know about it beforehand. The weird part about it with us is that I just went to the doctor for a check up and then all of a sudden I was having a baby. You are a little more aware of what's going to happen though. :)

Dana, those are good questions. I'll tell you how it worked for me. I was induced because I didn't want to be in labor while traveling through the canyon to Provo. They induced me at 11:00 and I had the epidural at 2:00 but not because I was in so much pain. I got it then because the anisteiologist(can't spell) was going to be giving 3 epidurals to c-sections and be gone for 2 hours. So I got one before he left to do that. It was a good thing I got it then because I was ready to push at 4:00 and it would have been to late by then. My 2nd labor was 4 hours and my advise is to not wait too long before getting one. But it was nice to be able to walk around for the first 2 hours.
I hope this helps you with your decision. Good luck!

When I was induced things were a lot different then what you will be going through. But with Luke and Alita they started the patosin before my epidural. I requested the epidural once my water was broke. That is when the contractions got more painful. On another note I was at a baby shower this weekend and heard some GREAT advice about labor. They said, "be a BIG BABY. Don't try and be tuff. Have a zero pain tolerance level. You never know how fast you will move (expecially with patosin, everyone is different). So request the epidural early so it doesn't end up being to late because you are being to tuff. This way you can enjoy progessing and not trying to just get through things."

Hey Dana, I was just catching up on your blog. I was going to comment though on how hard it can be to juggle time between the older sibling and the new one. Anyway, what I did was I had a nursing box I would get down that was full of things Kennedi could do by me while I nursed. Books were good to include because then I could read to her. Anyway, I would just get that down and then it kept her close to me and made it a special time for her too. Just wanted to pass that on. Good luck with everything. I will keep checking to see the new arrival. Lots of love.

My advice isn't from a been there done that point of view, just from what I've learned in my classes about the medical point of things. Don't get an epidural before they induce you, that can make the labor last a lot longer, plus sometimes the induction doesn't work, and you at least want to feel to know if it did or not. Also, there actually is a limit to how much medication they can give you. Most people don't realize this because most never get close to that limit. But induced labors tend to last longer, and you don't want to run out at the end when it's most painful. Chances are that won't be a worry. So, I would say to get it after you've been induced and whenever you want to go the pain to go away.
Oh, and do everything you can in your power to help with the labor, i.e. walk, eat pineapple etc...

I was induced with both of my kids so dont know any different but honestly its not bad at all. I waited a few hours to get the epidural with mine because I had heard the epidural slows down labor for some yet goes faster for some because they can finally relax. You will know once you get there what is right for you. I think this labor will be shorter then your first. Mine with my second was cut in half! Pushing timr went from 2 hours to 8 minutes too! 2nd babies come alot quicker! I am so happy for you that you will be out of your pregnancy misery soon!!!

I was induced with all three of my kids (my body doesn't believe in going into labor). I waited for the epidural with Megan. I got it after 22 hours of labor and I should have gotten it sooner. After I got it my body was finally able to relax enough to dilate and she was born 10 hours later. With Jeremy I got it after about 5 hours of labor and he was born 3 hours later. With Emma I don't remember how long I waited, which is sad since she's the most recent, but it was quite a few hours after the pitocin started. Like Brit said, you'll want to be able to feel the contractions in the beginning to know that it's working.

Good Luck!!
